Magazine Publishing Business: Week forty 2017
Benjamin Franklin helped write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Yet Franklin’s own publication, General Magazine, folded after just six issues. Magazines are tough business.
In fact, 9 out of 10 new magazines fail, according to Cheryl Woodward, publishing business consultant and author ofStarting and Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine. Such are the kinds of Statistics you flip through when you want to find out about magazines and the business there rein.
It got me to what a friend observed about magazines business in the local market:
“I’ve realised 8 out 10 Kenyan entrepreneurs ranging from age 22 to 30 want to start their own magazines covering topics ranging from Lifestyle, Fashion, Beauty, Business, Entrepreneurship etc. I personally think and i stand to be corrected the reason why this kind of sector/entrepreneurship is not growing, becoming sustainable, attracting valuable partners and investors is:-
Lack of CREATIVITY ( we just don’t want to think out of the box)
The business model is just kinda the same. ( you not giving advertisers rare new options)
You invest a lot of time time on design and forget brand development.
Lack of innovation (again you not giving us something new)
Your topics, way of writing is just the same.
Take your time, think about your image, aspire to be different in all aspects of the brand let this be a motivation that doesn’t allow you to sleep, get brand developers you can get them at StartUpNow Bywilkingsfadhili, lastly keep rethinking your business model”(Source: Facebook_Wilkings Fadhili.)
